Sustainable development is most critically needed in the global south: The region’s reliance on natural resources for socio-economic livelihood makes it most vulnerable to the negative impacts of the current and future degradation of the environment.

What is needed is a tangible definition of sustainable development that will take into account the social, economic, and ecological hurdles that this region faces. Such a need can only be met through a partnership between key decisions makers of today in the private and public sector, and leaders of tomorrow, the students, that will encourage dialogue toward suitable sustainable development approaches for the region. This will shape curriculum, policy and practice within an understandable framework of sustainable development. Thus students of sustainable development have a crucial role to play in shaping the ideas and practices of today, to become well-informed leaders of tomorrow.

Up until a year ago, sustainable development for me was just a term that was mentioned in the newspapers or in books. As I started to research the topic, I soon realised that sustainable development is more than just a term bandied about by academics and environmentalists - it is the protection of our future.

One of oikos Johannesburg’s project’s, the Siyakhana Permaculture Garden has opened my eyes to ways of sustaining our environment for future generations and especially aiding and educating those less privileged than myself. On the African continent, where poverty is a daily reality, we need to spread the message of sustainable development which will help Africans to help themselves and their environment. It is up to my generation to fix the mistakes of past generations because it is now or never. I am proud to be a member of oikos as it enables me to spread the message and change our future.

As emerging global citizens, it is a diligent duty to contribute what we can to the emphasising, discussing, planning and analysis of sustainable development models.

The importance of sustainable development is to not only conserve, but also enforce a respect for the environment. The environment maintains our existence and in return we must maintain its existence, an action that is both a pertinent obligation and a moral/ethical gesture of politeness. The responsible use of all natural resources benefits the generations to come and the procuring of the world’s assets for ongoing development ensures that the citizens of the future as well as every future citizen are treated with dignity.

Human innovation has been proven to achieve near impossible tasks. There is no reason why we should not believe that with enough willpower and perseverance, the international society cannot come up with solutions to overcome the impediment of development that degrades the environment, and replace it with development that parallels with the maintenance of our surroundings- in short, a form of enduring sustainable development.
